Tanzania’s inflation increases to 5.2 pc

Tanzanian consumers paid more to obtain good and services in January following an increased headline inflation. According to the Consumer Price Index report published by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) today, annual headline inflation for the month of January, 2017 increased to 5.2% from 5.0% recorded in December, 2016.

The annual headline inflation rate for the year ending January, 2017 explains that, the speed of price increase for commodities in the year ending January, 2017 has increased compared to the speed of price increase recorded for the year ended December, 2016.
The report shows that the overall index went up to 105.92 in January, 2017 from 100.71 recorded in January, 2016.
Food and Non Alcoholic Beverages Inflation Rate for the Month of January, 2017 has increased to 7.6% from 7.0% recorded in December, 2016.  
Annual Inflation Rate for food consumed at home and away from home has increased to 8.2% in January, 2017 from 7.4% recorded in December, 2016.
In addition, the report shows that the 12 month index change for non-food products has decreased to 3.6% in January, 2017 as compared to 3.8% recorded in December, 2016.
The annual inflation rate which excludes food and energy for the month of January, 2017 has decreased to 2.3% from 2.5% recorded in December, 2016.    
The monthly headline inflation rate for the month of January, 2017 has increased by 0.8% compared to an increase of 0.7% recorded in December, 2016.
The overall index has increased to 105.92 in January, 2017 from 105.04 recorded in December; 2016.
The increase of the overall index is attributed to price increase of both food and non food items.
Some food items that contributed to such an increase include; maize grains by 16.0%, maize flour by 10.0%, rice by 2.6%, beans by 6.3%, cooking bananas by 5.8%, cocoyam by 5.3% and sweet potatoes by 2.5%.
On the other hand, non food items that contributed to such an increase include; charcoal by 3.2% and refrigerators by 2.4%.
