Tanesco increases power stake to 75 pc

Tanzania total electricity generated during the third quarter of last year increased from 1,550 million kwh in 2015 to 1,706 million kwh in 2016 equivalent to 10.1 percent increase.

While electricity generated by TANESCO increased by 42.3 percent, generation by Independent Power Producers (IPP) declined by 34.8 percent, according to the Q3, 2016 GDP highlights published by the National Bureau of Statistics.
During the period under review, TANESCO generated 75.2 percent of the total electricity. The remaining 24.8 percent was generated by IPP which include small scale plants.
Electricity generated from gas sources was significant as it contributed more than 50 percent of the total electricity generated during the reference period. ]
Hydro and thermal electricity generated accounted for 31 percent and 14.7 percent of the total electricity respectively.
The electrivity activity recorded a growth rate of 11.8 percent in the third quarter of 2016 compared to a negative 1.1 percent in the third quarter of 2015. The growth was attributed by increased generation specifically from gas source.
