Tanzania inflation eases to 4.9 per cent in July

Tanzania annual headline inflation rate for the month of August, 2016 has further decreased to 4.9% from 5.1% recorded in July, the August Consumer Price Index released today by the National Bureau of Statistics has shown. 
 
The decrease of annual headline inflation Rate for the year ending August, 2016 explains that, the speed of price increase for commodities in the year ending August, 2016 has decreased as compared to the speed of price increase recorded for the year ended July, 2016. 
 
The overall index went up to 103.28 in August, 2016 from 98.49 recorded in August, 2015. 
 
Food and Non Alcoholic Beverages Inflation Rate for the Month of August 2016 has decreased to 7.0% from 7.6% recorded in July, 2016.

Food and non food inflation rates 
 
Annual inflation rate for food consumed at home and away from home has decreased to 7.0% in August, 2016 from 7.8% recorded in July, 2016.

In addition, the 12 month index change for non food products has decreased to 3.0% in August, 2016 from 3.2% recorded in July, 2016.

Inflation rate excluding food and energy
The annual inflation rate which excludes food and energy for the month of August, 2016 has stagnated at 2.6% as it was recorded in July, 2016. 3

The NCPI used to compute this type of Inflation Rate excludes food consumed at home and restaurants, non alcoholic beverages, petrol, diesel, gas, kerosene, charcoal, firewood and electricity.

NBS report shows that the Monthly Headline Inflation Rate for the month of August, 2016 has decreased by 0.2% compared to an increase of 0.03% which was recorded in July, 2016.

The overall index has decreased to 103.28 in August, 2016 from 103.50 recorded in July, 2016.The decrease of the overall index is mainly attributed to price decrease of food items.

Some food items that contributed to such decrease include; cereals by 0.6%, cassava flour by 2.1%, sardines by 3.0% and vegetables by 2.6%.

The Purchasing Power of the consumer's Tanzanian Shilling measures the change in the value of consumer goods and services that a Tanzanian Shilling could buy at different periods.

That is, if the overall level of Consumer Price Index (CPI) goes up, the Purchasing Power of a Tanzanian Shilling goes down.
The purchasing power of 100 Tanzanian Shillings has reached TZS 96 and 83 cents in August, 2016 from December, 2015.
